A wedding dress sample sale is an event where bridal boutiques offer heavily discounted gowns from their inventory, typically ranging from 50% to 90% off their original price. These sales are highly anticipated by brides-to-be because they provide an opportunity to purchase high-end, designer wedding dresses at a fraction of their usual cost, who doesn’t love a bargain!?

Sample sales are held for a variety of reasons. Often, bridal shops need to make room for new collections or seasonally updated styles, so they clear out their current inventory, including dresses that have been tried on by brides in the boutique.

These gowns, known as “samples,” are usually the ones used as store models for brides to try before ordering a new dress in their size. The sizes of sample dresses are usually limited, as they tend to reflect common sizes used for in-store fittings, typically between bridal sizes 8 to 12, although this can vary. Here at Maria Modes we pride ourselves on having a wide range of shop samples for our brides to try on, from an 8 to 24 so naturally our sample sale dresses are in this size range too.

One of the biggest advantages of shopping at a wedding dress sample sale is the potential to find a designer gown at a great discount. Everyone knows how hard it is to budget for a wedding so making a significant saving on your wedding dress can really make a difference. And for some brides it’s a chance to own a luxury gown that might otherwise be out of reach.

However, there are some trade-offs to consider. Sample dresses are “sold as seen” which means they may have minor wear and tear, such as loose beads, small stains, or tiny fabric snags, from being tried on by other brides. For this reason, brides need to closely inspect any dress before purchasing to ensure they are comfortable with the gown’s condition.

Another key aspect to consider is that because most sample sales are made up of discontinued dresses, meaning the designer doesn’t make them anymore, a dress you like may only be available in a limited number of sizes. So when shopping at a sample sale, it’s important to factor in potential alteration costs on top of the dress price.

Generally a wedding dress can be altered down 2 sizes quite easily and up at least 1, so your dream dress is not out of the question, it’s just that you may pay more for your alterations, eating into those savings. Finally, shopping at a sample sale can be a high-energy experience. The sales can be crowded, and there is usually a sense of urgency since dresses are sold off the peg so once they’re gone, they’re gone. This creates an exciting, but sometimes more pressured environment for brides.

In summary, a wedding dress sample sale is a fantastic opportunity for brides to purchase high-quality, designer gowns at a reduced price. While there are challenges, such as the condition of the dresses and limited sizing, the cost savings and the chance to snag a dream dress make these events a popular option for budget-conscious brides and they are certainly on the rise.
