From first look to last dance: The ultimate guide to perfect wedding photography moments

When it comes to capturing the real story of your wedding day, choosing the right photographer is key. Today, we’re catching up with award winning photographer,  Stuart Hornby,  who is known for capturing natural, real, and beautiful wedding imagery.

Stuart is an expert at capturing every moment; from the first look to the last dance, he shares his thoughts on how couples can make the most of their wedding photos, ensuring every special moment is beautifully preserved. Here’s his ultimate guide to the key wedding photo opportunities you won’t want to miss.

CB – Stuart, weddings are such emotional and unforgettable events, and I’m sure your job of capturing those moments must be so rewarding. If you had to help couples plan out the key moments to focus on for their wedding photos, what would you say?

SH-  Oh, absolutely! Every couple wants their photos to capture the real feelings of the day, and there are definitely a few key moments, I’d recommend focusing in on. Let’s start with first look. It’s such a special, intimate moment – you can feel the excitement and raw emotion in the air. Whether it’s before the ceremony or as the bride walks down the aisle, this is a prime opportunity to capture genuine reactions. I always tell couples to keep it relaxed, stay in the moment, and focus on each other. That’s when the magic happens, and trust me, the photos will be incredible.

CB- I love that! And I’m sure there are so many little moments leading up to the ceremony that shouldn’t be overlooked as well?

SH – Definitely, the pre-ceremony prep is often underrated. The excitement of getting ready – the bride glowing as she sees herself properly for the first time in her dress with her hair and makeup all done, the bridesmaids helping with the final touches, even the details like your shoes or the bouquet – all of those moments add depth and personality to the story. They may seem small, but they’re so important. Plus, they really show off the energy of the day and set the stage for what’s to come.

CB – Now, the ceremony itself… That’s usually where all the “big moments” happen. How do you manage to capture everything without being too intrusive?

SH – The ceremony is the heart of the day for sure! Whether it’s the vows, the ring exchange, or that first kiss, I’m always there to capture every single detail, but without disrupting the moment. The key here is to stay out of the way while still getting the right shots. I’ll be moving around, but my goal is to blend in and let the couple focus on each other. It’s their moment, and I want to make sure it stays that way!

CB – After the ceremony, it’s time for the couple portraits. How do you make sure those shots feel natural and not overly posed?

SH –  Couple portraits are one of my favourite parts of the day! By this point, the couple is married and in such a joyful, relaxed mood. I always aim to keep things light and fun – I’ll guide them with some gentle poses, but it’s important to let them be themselves. I love when couples can just chat, laugh, or share a quiet moment together. Those are the photos that really show the connection and joy they’re feeling. The more natural, the better!

CB – And when the party starts, things must get pretty lively! How do you manage to capture those spontaneous, candid moments?

SH – The reception is always full of energy! From the first dance to the guests on the dance floor, there are endless opportunities for candid moments. I think the key here is to just stay in the moment. I don’t want anyone to feel like they have to pose. The best shots happen when people are just enjoying themselves – laughing with friends, a tearful speech, or a hug from family. I’m always keeping an eye out for those moments and letting the day unfold naturally.

CB – The first dance can be one of the most emotional moments of the day. How do you approach that shot?

Stuart Hornby: The first dance is definitely one of those moments that always pulls at my heartstrings. It’s quiet, intimate, and often when the emotions really sink in. By this point, the energy of the day has calmed down, and it’s just the couple together, soaking in everything that’s happened. It’s a beautiful moment to capture, and it always makes for such a poignant photo. I love being able to preserve that  magical moment of the day.

CB – Those moments sound beautiful! But let’s be real, weddings can be pretty hectic. Any tips for couples to stay calm and enjoy the day while still getting great photos?

SH – Absolutely! First off, just breathe and relax – the best photos happen when you’re having fun and feeling comfortable. Don’t stress too much about every shot. I’m there to guide you, and the goal is to just enjoy the day. If things don’t go exactly to plan or if the schedule shifts a bit, that’s totally ok! Weddings are full of surprises, and I’ll capture all the important moments no matter what. And most importantly, trust your photographer. I always say to my couples, you’ve chosen me because you trust that I’ll capture your story in the best way possible – so just enjoy the ride!

CB – Great advice, Stuart, it sounds like the key to amazing wedding photos is just letting go and staying present in the moment.

SH – Exactly, at the end of the day, the photos are a reflection of how you felt. If you’re relaxed, happy, and in the moment, those photos will tell your story perfectly. And that’s what I’m here to capture – the real, beautiful moments that make your day unforgettable.
