A Magical Weekend

Mr & Mrs Roby

From the first moment that we saw the huge stand at the Wedding Show, we were impressed.  Concerned the luxury venue would be too far for guests to travel, we continued to browse.  With many places on display, nothing quite matched up to the Abbey House Hotel on the first impression.  The four-star award-winning hotel was appealing on first look, and situated in stunning Cumbria so we had the chance to make a wedding day into a fun packed weekend.   Venturing back to the stand, we looked to find out more about the well-presented hotel and had a chat with John, and he kindly invited us to visit the venue for a complimentary stay. Returning home, we excitedly shared the information about the hidden gem in Cumbria.

As we made the journey through Cumbria, the scenery was stunning but nothing prepared us for the impressive statement building and grounds that opened in front of us.  The venue offered a wow factor that we wanted for our special day. With the historical Abbey ruins a few seconds away, there is so much to explore.

Our wedding party was on the large side, with seven bridesmaids, seven groomsmen, two-page boys and flower girls, the on-site lodge was a facility that allowed us to enjoy our final night before the wedding and then prepare for the morning without the risk of bumping into each other.  We used the cocktail area of Oscars as a meeting point for guests and spent a few hours catching up, sharing stories and a few cocktails of course.  The lodge offers four fantastic rooms that allowed the makeup artist and hairdresser to work their magic.  It was great to have all my favourite girls in the same house for one final sleep over.  We giggled for hours and made memories to last a lifetime. We then slept for a few hours until our hectic morning schedule started.  We ventured into the main building starting our morning with a delicious breakfast.  No request was too big for the staff; Jess was on hand to double check all the final details, reassuring us that everything will run smoothly.

The ceremony and celebrations took place in the beautiful Great Hall; with a stunning fireplace we decided to make this the focal point of our ceremony.  The Hall was perfect for a mid-sized wedding party.  With a live pianist and vocals from a close family friend, the wedding was well underway.  “I remember being nervous, waiting for the aisle walk.  Hand in hand with my dad I was ready to meet Ian and share our vows with our guests.  Walking into the room and seeing all the smiling faces of our closest friends and family will be a moment I’ll never forget.  All nerves dissolved when I saw Ian’s smile waiting with the registrar.”

After the ceremony, it was lovely to see John and Jess who had been amazing throughout the entire planning process.  With the venue being a few hours from home, all the vendors came highly recommended from the hotel, the team of wedding planners took care of all the bookings on our behalf.  From a fabulous photographer who relaxed everyone including the camera shy, to an amazing venue dresser who went the extra mile to make a million Pinterest posts a reality.  To share a glass of fizz with the pair was a perfect start to the party.  The staff were on hand to serve fabulous canapes and ensure all guests enjoyed a glass or two of fizz.

Steve Hillman was our chosen photographer.  At times we didn’t even know he was there as he blended in perfectly.  His friendly approach allowed him to capture some of the most magical pictures we could of dreamt of.  We even broke Steve’s blog views record when he published the blog of our wedding photos.  Steve knows Abbey House well and escorted us to take in the most stunning backdrops, whilst catching the emotions of the day perfectly.

As the wedding guests enjoyed the grounds in the glorious sunshine, the staff set to work to get the Great Hall ready for the wedding breakfast and speeches.  Dodd’s florist had done a fantastic job on the centrepieces, and they added the finishing touches to the beautiful room.  Our guests were treated to a stunning meal recommended by Jess Lowery, a delicious main of a blade of beef and an after eight cheesecake that was brought to the venue from a cake maker from back home.  Guests could then refresh with tea and coffee and more prosecco.

After lunch, the younger guests bolted outdoors to enjoy the bouncy castle and mini football goals after sitting beautifully through the amazing speeches.  Entertaining the guests throughout the day was important to us.  Getting the evening celebrations underway the first dance was a live rendition of The One by Kodaline.  John was kind enough to allow party cannons to get the evening started.  Handing over the mic, the DJ took centre stage and the dancefloor filled straight away as he worked through our playlist.  The well-stocked private bar was a hit with the guests, especially the Jager bar.

As a final treat to our guests we added a spectacular firework display.  The 8-minute display was complemented by every guest and added a unique feel as guests young and old enjoyed playing with their sparklers. An evening buffet of home-made Cumbrian pies & peas with fries and for the younger guest’s cheeseburgers and chips, all went down a treat.  Back inside the dance floor was kept alive by the DJ who created a fun and lively atmosphere.

Abbey House has a fantastic selection of rooms for guests to choose from, all exceptionally decorated with excellent amenities.  The Princess Suite is a breath-taking bridal suite that would be difficult to beat.  A perfect way to end a perfect day.

As a couple, we cannot thank the staff and vendors of Abbey House Hotel and Gardens for making our dream day a reality.  From start to finish we were taken care of like royalty.  The commitment to delivering a perfect experience is apparent throughout every stage of the planning.  We are looking forward to returning to Abbey House Hotel for our first anniversary and reliving the magic of our special weekend.

Thank you for making our day so special.
