The day actually starts way before I show up at the venue. Wedding prep isn’t just about charging batteries and checking lenses. I always spend time chatting with the couple beforehand, getting to know them beyond the details of the big day. I want to learn about their personalities, their style, and any little touches they want to include. We’ll talk about their favourite spots, those key moments they don’t want to miss, and anything else that’s meaningful to them.

On the morning of the wedding, I double-check all the gear—camera, backup gear, memory cards, flashes, you name it. But it’s also about getting into the right mindset. I’ll have a look at the day’s timeline, speak to the team at the venue and mentally prepare to switch between professional focus and creative intuition. This way, no matter what unexpected twists the day might throw at me, I’m ready to roll with it and capture everything.

Creativity meets chaos: The wedding day juggle

Weddings are always a lovely whirlwind. From the moment I arrive, there’s this buzzing energy—bridesmaids getting ready, flowers being delivered, families catching up, and that charged excitement before the ceremony. No matter how much I prepare, there are always those unpredictable moments that pop up.

The real challenge is juggling all the chaos while still making sure the photos stay natural and beautiful. I’ve got to be ready to capture moments of joy, tears, and laughter without being in the way. Plus, I still need to keep an eye on the more practical things—getting the group shots in the right order, making sure key people are in the frame, and making sure the couple isn’t getting overwhelmed with too many posed shots or too much direction.

One of my favourite parts of the day is when I’m capturing the candid moments that happen in-between all the planned events. It’s those subtle, quiet moments—the knowing glances, a hand squeeze, the laughter during a speech—that really tell the story of the day. Being there at just the right moment to capture that real, raw emotion is what makes wedding photography so special.

The joy of capturing memories

Despite all the chaos and challenges, being a wedding photographer is hands down one of the most rewarding jobs out there. There’s something truly magical about being part of one of the happiest days in someone’s life. Whether it’s the bride seeing herself for the first time or a couple sharing their first kiss, each moment is unique and full of emotion. It’s an honour to witness those milestones and knowing that my photos will preserve those memories for years to come is what makes it all worth it.

And of course, once the day’s done, the work doesn’t stop there. The real magic happens when I sit down to edit the photos. That’s where I can really bring out the emotion and fine-tune each shot, making sure every image captures the couple’s day, their personalities, and the beauty of it all.

Building trust and connection

At the end of the day, wedding photography isn’t just about knowing your gear inside and out—it’s about building trust and connection with your couples. From the first meeting to the moment you hand over the photos, my goal is to make the couple feel comfortable and confident throughout the whole process. Being invited into such a personal, intimate day is a huge privilege, and that’s something I don’t take lightly.
