Adam and I met way back in 2003 when we both lived and worked in Suffolk. I think I knew from our first ever date that we would be together for a long time, as I felt like I had already known him for years We had seven happy years together before Adam took me to Edinburgh for Valentine’s Day in 2010. He dragged me out of bed ridiculously early in the morning to climb the dormant volcano on the outskirts of Edinburgh to watch the sunrise and proposed when we got to the top. As romantic as it was, I wish I could say I looked my best but windswept, half asleep and without a scrap of make-up on was more realistic. Still, I said yes through some tears and was ecstatic at the gorgeous white gold diamond trilogy ring that he had picked out himself. We spent the rest of the day enjoying afternoon tea with pink champagne at the luxurious Balmoral Hotel and chatting excitedly about our future wedding.
We soon set a date of August 2011 for our wedding and I threw myself into the planning straight away, and loved every minute of it. When we visited Heaton House Farm we just knew it was the right venue for us. We had some specific ideas about décor and the tiny touches we wanted for our wedding that would make it unique and reflect our personalities, and Heaton House Farm were more than happy to accommodate these.
The build up to the wedding flew by, but all of the preparations were sorted out in good time thanks to the staff at Heaton House and our other fabulous suppliers – and a little help from family and friends! The morning of the wedding was a blur, which may have had something to do with only the three hours sleep I had managed the previous night due to a mixture of nerves and excitement. My bridesmaids and I enjoyed a bit of pre-wedding bubbly in the preparation room when we arrived at Heaton House Farm which was very welcome to calm the nerves. Not too much mind, as I had decided to do my own make-up for the day and still had false eyelashes to apply! This gave our photographers, Diane and Paul from Creative Photography a chance to take some candid ‘getting-ready’ shots of me and the girls. Unbeknown to me, Adam and his ushers had already had to return home once after leaving having forgot one of the usher’s suits! However, when it came down to it, it was me who was ten minutes late despite having been at the venue two hours early. It is a woman’s prerogative after all!
Adam and I had opted for a vintage theme for our wedding which was reflected in my beautiful made-to-measure Lyn Ashworth dress which had a lace bodice and a full lace skirt, overlaid with organza. The dress was tied with a satin ribbon at the waist which caused ten fraught minutes as my mum and bridesmaids struggled to tie the bow neatly. Eventually our photographer Diane came to the rescue and produced a large neat looking bow – which she then had to repeat three times on the bridesmaids! I accessorised my dress with a silk veil, pearl jewellery and opted for a relaxed hairstyle with flowing curls. Our flowers, provided by Wild Orchid, were creams and dusky pinks interwoven with pearls and lace. My bouquet, which brought a tear to my eye when it arrived, contained vintage broaches which I had been collecting over the past year. The bridesmaids wore chocolate brown and cream dresses to compliment the men’s suits which were also very dark brown. Our beautiful flower girl was very brave walking down the aisle first, sprinkling cream petals from her lace basket.
I walked down the aisle towards Adam to an instrumental version of ‘Moon River’ and when I got to the top Adam leaned in to me and said: “You look amazing”. I think we both had tears in our eyes, as did a few of our guests! After the ceremony the ladies enjoyed a glass of Kir Royale, whilst the gents had a choice of bottled beers and staff from Sue-Le-Bonne catering circulated with delicious canapés.
The weather had been hit and miss all morning and did nothing to dispel the view from our southern guests that it always rains ‘up north’! However, luckily Paul and Diane our photographers were able to catch a rare break in the clouds to get some beautiful shots in the water gardens at Heaton House, overlooking the stunning scenery. Adam and I had already thought of this possibility, as we are well accustomed to the weather around Manchester, and we knew that Heaton House provided plenty of indoor space for our guests to mingle if the weather proved a disappointment.
As Adam stands six foot five inches in height, my wedding shoes were the source of much deliberation as I did not want to spend the whole day straining my neck to kiss him. Luckily I am a huge high heel fan, and opted for a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti pale pink lace sling backs, with a five and a half inch heel, which I am proud to say I managed to keep on all day and all night for twelve hours in total – I think it took several days for the feeling to return to my feet afterwards! I even managed to perch on a rock in them in the grounds of the venue so that Paul could take a dramatic shot of me and the bridesmaids – luckily I didn’t fall off!
It was important to us to make our wedding personal to us. My mum spent hours and hours perfecting our stunning wedding cake, which matched our theme with pearlised icing and was displayed on a white vintage cake stand.It certainly tasted every bit as good as it looked. Also with the help of my mum, I handmade the table plan and place name cards which were each decorated with a lace and pearl bow – we must have handmade over one hundred bows and by the time they were finished I never wanted to see another lace bow again! I typed an individual love quote on to each place card and many of the guests took them home as souvenirs of the day.
Our wedding guests enjoyed a beautiful three course meal provided by Sue-Le-Bonne catering, washed down with more wine and champagne, before being treated to music from Beatles tribute band The Cheatles who got everyone on to the dance floor. Before the day came, my married friends had advised me to take a moment at some point to take everything in as the whole day will fly by. So I made sure that I tried to remember everything and enjoy every second – but it still wasn’t long enough and I would love to relive the day all over again, not changing a single thing! One of my favourite parts of the day was finally sitting down with Adam in the bridal suite in the early hours after everyone had left, chatting about how things had gone over a brew and a bacon roll..…and of course finally taking my shoes off!
