How To Choose Your Perfect Wedding Photographer

1. Style

The first question to ask yourself is what style of photography are you looking for? If you would prefer reportage to vintage, natural lighting to flash photography, traditional to contemporary…the list goes on! It is important that your photographer’s vision matches yours, so take the time to look at a variety of wedding photographers before making your shortlist.

2. Personality

Make sure you meet your photographer before you take the plunge and go ahead and book them. I can’t stress how important it is that you feel comfortable with them and that your personalities match. There is nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable with someone, especially when they are pointing a camera at you. If you feel awkward, it will show in the photographs.

3. Budget

Work out how much you want to spend on photography. A wedding photographer could be 10% of your wedding budget, so it is important you choose the right one for you. I highly recommend booking a professional to shoot your wedding. Although your friend or relative may have a decent digital SLR and may be great at taking candid shots on the weekend, they will not have the experience of what goes on at a wedding from start to finish. A professional photographer will have all the equipment needed to cope with a variety of lighting situations, as well as knowing where to be to capture those special moments that an amateur might just miss!

4. Finer details

Give your photographer a shot list for the traditional family portraits, there will be so much going on that someone might be forgotten!

Find out from your photographer how long they will stay with you. Some photographers only stay until the first dance, whilst others stay until midnight.

Make sure you know how you will receive the final shots; a DVD of all the images or just some of the prints?

5. Where to search for your perfect photographer?

The first place to look is in local wedding magazines, Google searches are also great way to find photographers fast, but you may have to trawl through pages and pages to find what you are looking for.

Wedding blogs are another great way to have a look at various styles of wedding photography, but don’t forget to ask your friends and families for their recommendations too!
