We want a personalised wedding cake that fits our day perfectly, how do we know which supplier will be up for the job?

Ask to look at images of cakes they’ve previously designed so you can get a feel for their style and way of working. A cake is not just a cake, every cake maker has a different way of working and these will result in different looks when it comes to the finished article. Talk to the cake maker, if they are on your wavelength it’s a great help as they are more likely to understand your ideas.

When couples come to see me with interesing and unusual ideas, I look to see how I can fit them into a workable design and offer advice on how we can achieve the best results. Don’t be pushed into something that’s not for you, wedding cakes are often the centrepice of the reception so it needs to be right for you and fit in with your perfect cake ideas.
Take along fabric swatches, details of the dress and a sample of your wedding stationery to emphasise the look you want. In the past we have taken inspiration for cakes from items ranging from a gorgeous china plate which was the Bride’s Nan’s plate to something as completely random as the Battersea power station. In fact this week the inspiration for the cake came from a panel of the Bride’s dress. Beautiful lace work with ever so subtle sparkle a few more examples can be seen with these cakes: The Butterfly cake took inspiration from the colour scheme within the bridesmaid’s dresses and invitations which had a tiny butterfly on each one, the eight tier lace cake was inspired by the lace on Helen’s dress and the bright winter flowers cake was inspired by the bright flowers on each table and in the Bride’s Bouquet.

When it comes to weddings, inspiration is all around you and it’s your day so don’t be scared to take inspiration from something that means a lot to you. However random it may seem.
After training in patisserie I completely believe that a cake should not only look amazing, it should taste great too, so it’s really important to arrange a tasting session to sample a selection of the cakes the company has to offer.
